Exemption Filing Information

If you own residential property within Marietta city limits and you live on that property by January 1, you qualify for a Homestead Exemption of $4,000 off the assessed value. A married couple is allowed homestead exemption on only one residence.

To qualify for School Tax Exemption, your property must be owner-occupied and you must be 62 years of age by January 1 of the qualifying year. You must provide proof of age (copy of driver’s license, birth certificate, Georgia State Identification Card, etc.). School Tax Exemption is granted for no more than one acre of land.

If you are totally disabled, please indicate that on the exemption form and submit the appropriate documents with the form for additional exemptions.

Veterans with a 100% disability or compensated at the 100% disability level as adjudicated by the United States Department of Veterans Affairs, and defined in Georgia Code Section 48-5-48, are entitled to an exemption. You must furnish a letter from the United States Department of Veterans Affairs, Veterans Administration, or discharge papers from military records certifying the qualifying disability.

The Veteran’s Disability Exemption extends to the unmarried, surviving spouse or minor children at the time of the applicant’s death, provided they continue to occupy the home as a residence and homestead. An exemption form is enclosed for your filing convenience. Be sure to complete all information that applies to you.

The surviving spouse of a Firefighter/Peace Officer killed in the line of duty is entitled to an exemption equal to the full value of the homestead. A copy of a death certificate and documentation from the municipality evidencing the Firefighter or Peace Officer was killed in the line of duty is required.

Homestead, School Tax, and Disability Exemptions may be filed from April 2 through April 1. The deadline for filing for the current year exemption is April 1. Even if you qualify for any or all exemptions, you will not receive the exemptions for that year if you do not meet the deadline. Applications may be mailed or personally delivered to the Tax Division. Should you choose to mail your application, a confirmation of receipt will only be mailed if it is accompanied by a self-addressed, stamped envelope. No exemption applications will be accepted via fax or email and could result in the forfeiture of your exemption for the year in which you are applying.
